AUGUST 2020

Dear friends and well-wishers of TARA,

We are pleased to share our quaterly newsletter with you. We warmly welcome all the people who have joined TARA in the last few months as sponsors, donors, friends or well-wishers.

Thank you for your unconditional support during these uncertain times.

 School under lockdown

Since early March, schools have remained closed for 320 million children in India. An alarming majority of them have no means to access online classes, which puts them at a higher risk of dropping out.

In TARA Homes, our social workers, caretakers and teachers have been committed to turn online education and life under lockdown into a healthy routine. The children have been getting the support they need to adjust to this new way of learning. This has enabled them to stay on track and continue being at par with their schoolmates.

In these exceptionally uncertain times, TARA’s team has shown its unity and dedication to provide the children with the education they deserve. Everyone is well aware that the children’s education is key to a bright future, and hence must not be put on hold.In the meantime, the conscientious teachers of TARA Outreach Centre have developed distant tutoring methods to keep their students motivated and eager to learn. Although teaching remotely is challenging, it is however the only way to prevent children from dropping out of school and getting involved in child labour or other illegal activities.

TARA Outreach Centre distributes 14,000 meals per month

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to temporarily shut down TARA Outreach Centre. Nonetheless we took it upon ourselves to not stop supporting the community of Saidulajab in South Delhi. Rather, we decided to shift our activities to address the most urgent needs.

Since its inception in February 2019, the team of TARA Outreach Centre has done a remarkable job of developing ties with vulnerable families of the community. This was particularly visible in the very first weeks of the lockdown. The families had suddenly lost their livelihood and in their desperation, they reached out to us for help. We quickly reorganized our activities to face the emergency.

We have distributed dry rations and fed around 300 people on a weekly basis. Beyond the humanitarian aid, we have also raised awareness about the virus and the safety precautions one must take to safeguard oneself and their families. Our team has remained in close contact with the community with regards to monitoring health issues and the risk of domestic violence, which as per multiple studies, has been on the rise.

Hopefully, we will be able to reopen TARA Outreach Centre within the next two or three months.

We invite you to share our donation-in kind campaign running online.

Girls' empowerment and menstrual health

Around the world, menstrual hygiene still remains a taboo that has devastating consequences. Last year, the UN called to action the international community to combat discriminatory practices on this issue.
At TARA, girls participate in awareness sessions on menstruation, and emotional and physiological changes that one goes through. Girls are encouraged to freely express their thoughts, questions and feelings.
Education about menstrual hygiene is also crucial for boys.
At TARA Boys and TARA Girls, we make sure that the children access appropriate and accurate information so that they develop a positive outlook on puberty, have proper knowledge about their bodies and eventually gain self-confidence.

Since June, we have been participating in the #periodpaath campaign in India led by the organization Youth Ki Awaaz, that raises awareness for better menstrual health education.
